Hi, I’m Antawn Gonzalez.
I am a third-year PhD student who joined the NanoSep lab in February 2026. My research centers on the synthesis and characterization of 2D irreversible polymers for thin-film applications. Ultimately, I seek to explore the chemistry of 2D polyaramids to surpass their known limitations and design novel 2D polyaramid systems.
Prior to my time at CU Boulder, I earned my B.S. in Chemistry from UT Austin in 2022. There, I worked under Dr. Elizabeth Ilardi on the synthesis and characterization of aminotetralin ligands. I was later awarded the Farr Endowment, allowing me to start an independent project focused on synthesizing bupropion analogues and exploring their therapeutic properties. Upon graduating, I wanted to shift my focus toward sustainable processes and renewable energy, which led me to a role as a research chemist at the energy startup EnergyX. On the solvent extraction R&D team, I fine-tuned and developed the SX portion of their Direct Lithium Extraction process to scale it up for a pilot plant. Simultaneously, I spearheaded the company's use of lithium NMR and aided in the design and synthesis of novel SX extractants.
This desire to synthetically advance renewable processes ultimately led me to pursue a graduate degree at CU Boulder, where I began my studies in Fall 2024. I initially worked in a synthetic organic chemistry lab under the mentorship of Dr. Santosh Shelar, where my main focus was the design and diastereoselective synthesis of germanium-containing glycosides. We then studied these glycosides to identify optimal conditions for chemical, oxidative, and electrochemical glycosylations.
Outside of the lab, I can mostly be found hiking, weightlifting, or walking my dog, Luna.
